Greetings from Somes Cove,
We have done it again! We’ve planned a summer chock-full of books, book people, and special programs. Read on …
Who’s coming: An exciting group of authors and illustrators, both new to our store and old friends, will visit Port In A Storm this summer.
Specials: We are thrilled to host two regional book launch parties. Linda Greenlaw will introduce her second Jane Bunker mystery, Fisherman’s Bend, and Chris Van Dusen will sign copies of Thinks Like a Pig, the last book in the acclaimed Mercy Watson Series. We’ll celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Thuya and Asticou Gardens with the book, Two Island Gardens: The Work of Charles K. Savage and join with the Northeast Harbor Library for readings by Beth Gutcheon and children’s author and illustrator, Melissa Sweet.
Port Side: Our companion store, Port Side in Bernard, just down the street from Thurston’s Lobster Pound, opens for its third summer on June 20th. We’ll have many new offerings of Maine-made gifts and Maine-themed books for all ages. Come and sit on the dock, and watch the ferry and lobster boats bring in their haul. It’s a perfect place to experience coastal Maine in all its beauty and history.
Spring Programs: Although summer is our busiest season for visitors, we are active all year collaborating with island nonprofit organizations and area schools. Port In A Storm helped organize a program for local 7th- and 8th-Graders at Pemetic School. The students worked together and reviewed books (which are posted in the bookstore), describing and recommending good reads for their peers. Earlier this spring, Port In A Storm traveled to Machias High School, at the school’s invitation, to provide a combination book fair plus a presentation by our friend, New York Times best-selling author, Linda Greenlaw. Parents and students at the high school roared with laughter at her humor and asked great questions about her life and work. The day was a tremendous success.
Our store and its staff find it deeply rewarding to offer a lasting commitment to our community, our readers, the authors and illustrators, and our loyal and supportive group of book-loving customers. All of us at Port In A Storm thank you for your continued support.
I look forward to welcoming you on the water’s edge in Somesville and in Bernard -- this summer!
